Two and two make four-new friends.

This morning two new friends emerged from my paintbox and found their way upon my kitchen wall. Two new paintings for my open house studio. So much tiny detail, I nearly went blind painting them.

We think we have two squirrels nesting above where these pictures hang. They are beautiful with their plumage tails, they dance around the garden, burying their edible treasure in secret places.

Today they were quiet, I think they could be hibernating.

Some sumptuously dark velvety inspiration shots from my tumblr achive

I could go on forever.

Come on in and stay a while.

It seems that there is some interest in my open house studio idea, well not exactly my idea, lots have done this before me, there are people interested in coming and having a look at my house, even if it is for a natter and glass of wine, which is more that fine by me!

I thought I would give you a sneak peek of my work that I have around my home. I have so many more ideas, big and small so there will be more to follow.

The first picture is on the main wall of our lounge. I love the colours with in this piece, there is a lot of depth, I think I must have put fifteen or so layers onto it. The next three pictures are also of our lounge.

I love to have over sized paintings on the wall, it gives it some impact.  The top two are at one end and the following two are at the other. The fish are very calming they sit above this mantle piece opposite one of our sofas. You can see it up closer here.

It is a dull day here in London, so this picture is not great. There are bugs painted onto the gold leaf. You can see more here. This painting is lovely as it really shines, light bounces off the gold leaf, which you can see from the street in front of our house.

This is a painting of Apollo butterflies male and female from a distance they look quite hidden but if you look here they are actually very defined.

Then we move down the hall past the front door, where there is another reflective painting, this time on silver leaf. For this one I used real silver and I am going to let it tarnish a little more before sealing it with varnish. I like the wonderful colours that comes from oxygen and metal reacting together. There is something nice about having no control over it too.

Then come with me down the hall and into the kitchen passing this painting of magnolia branches as you go through. The magnolias are pinker and warmer than the photo is letting on.

Here is the main wall in my kitchen, and essentially the heart of my home. The painting above the kitchen took me so many months, seasons came and went! It went through so many transformations before it was finally hung. I wish I had photographed each stage, it really did look terrible on many occasions, thankfully I managed to keep on going. Sometimes I think as an artist you wonder if a piece is finally finished, this one had many finishes several times over.

The piece next to it is one that I am working on at the moment, bugs and butterflies on a blue/gold leaf zooming around the board. I am going to have a little fun with this and add the odd bikini on a butterfly, bugs holding a cigar etc. The small patch of wall where this hangs is my 'studio', this and a cupboard that houses all my paints, so the doors can be closed when little people are around. (there have been a few disasters!)

The group of three pictures are the paper cuts I posted yesterday, I will add a fourth, time willing.

I made this for Tom's wedding anniversary present one year. (cotton) I managed to make it around Dillon taking his lunch time nap when he was little. I finished it with pastel a medium I am not familiar with, in fact I think this is the only thing I have made using it. As you can see as the years have gone on, and friends have visited they have curiously touched it and smudged the pastels! (you know who you are...!)

This is where we make tea. Calming colours and I think the first paper cut butterfly picture I made. I will open an etsy shop to sell these soon.

I have to run now, as Matilda needs to be picked up from nursery. I will show you upstairs next week.

Have a good weekend, and if you are interested in coming to my open house studio for a glass of wine and chat, please let me know, and I will sort out a date sometime in November. You can leave a comment below, or through the Facebook button in the side bar or email me. Thank you.

A medley of paper cuts.

I am still thinking of summer, despite the fact it is lashing it down outside. I am unable to let it go, yesterday it was so sunny and warm. I was lucky creativity came my way  in the form of paper cuts.

I am thinking about hosting a small gallery show here in my home to get feed back about my paintings. I was thinking coffee and cup cakes, but after todays down pour, I am thinking more along the lines of mulled wine and canapes.

Being

Gorgeous.

Debra Cronin's home.

All photographs Jason Busch.

Look at this gorgeous home belonging to Debra Cronin in Vogue Living. They describe it as ‘industrial vintage married delicate antiques’ she describes it as ‘Adams family meets Alice in Wonderland’. I love the feel of it, peeling paint is right up my street, (unfortunately not my husbands, so I only get to salivate at others good fortune.)
In her garden she grows seasonal produce for her underground dining business, Bite Club a venture she set up with her friend and chef David Speck. It’s a dining concept that sounds like a lot of fun. Imagine spending a lavish evening here with a table full of friends, bespoke menu and good wine. Heaven.
Happy weekend people!

Donya Coward

Nottingham based artist Donya Coward takes taxidermy to another level. Using her hands and reclaimed materials she creates the most wonderful creatures.

Donya is showing her new collection 'Should it be' at Curiosity a pop up shop in the heart of London, during London Design Festival.

Curiosity is the brain child of Catherine Hammerton, like a magpie she has collected  lots of interesting established and some shiny new British based creatives and brought them under one roof for this one off pop up shop.

Tomorrow morning she ventures to Surrey's worst kept secret, Kempton Antiques Market to gather treasures to fit out Curiosity.

I think this is going to be one very interesting magpie nest and one needs to be quick to grab a piece of the action.

Barking mad. Abigail Ahern

I am always up for a bit of fun, which is why I love Abigail Ahern

Many of you will know her, she wrote ‘A girls guide to decorating’. Her vision is incredible, she plays with scale in such a way that Alice in Wonderland should be looking over her shoulder. Charcoal grey dark walls, with electric colour that makes your mind zing and fools your brain into thinking you are a rock star.
Last week at Maison Object, Europe's finest and most visually stimulating trade show for the home, she launched her new lighting range. Poodles, greyhounds, pelicans and British bulldogs with the finest french shades, perched upon their heads like bonnets. I thought I might have to find a space for a sleek grey hound, but I think it is the fancy pants poodle that is yapping my name. (they are available next week from her online store here.)

This lady does not stop with pouches and books, oh no. As if her trendsetting interior shop and concession at Bluebird was not enough for her, she and her sister Gemma opened a flower shop, selling beautiful posies and strands of silk blooms to the masses that flock there. (and worldwide online)

The first Saturday of each month she throws open the doors of her interior design business to help those of us stuck decorating our nests for free advice, which she offers worldwide with Skype.  So go now, and book your slot, this woman has not got time to hang around. Lets face it, there is no stopping her.

She is way too cool for school, and I can’t wait to see what she pulls out of the bag next.

A small patch

Some good news arrived while we were away, after three years of being on our councils waiting list we have an allotment! A small patch of ground for us to grow some vegetables and perhaps a few flowers. On Saturday we went to their annual festival, where growers lined up their crops to be judged. This should be made into  TV program, great characters placed lines of black berries, beans, tomatoes, troughs of flowers onto tables, hoping to win a trophy. At the end they auctioned off the produce. I bought these dahlias, they add a little sunshine to our room as tonight I can hear the rhythm of rain falling on our windows, making our holiday a fading memory!
